Cool, Clear Water Keeps Upstate Fisheries Active
Anglers across South Carolina’s Upstate Region are finding productive fishing conditions as cooler water temperatures and generally clear water keep fish active and relatively predictable. From deep, clear reservoirs like Lake Hartwell, Lake Keowee, and Lake Jocassee to mountain-fed rivers such as the Chattooga and upper Savannah systems, the Upstate continues to offer some of the state’s most diverse freshwater fishing opportunities.
Bass Fishing Outlook
Bass fishing in the Upstate remains steady, with largemouth, spotted, and smallmouth bass relating to points, rocky shorelines, submerged structure, and depth changes. In clearer water systems, bass are responding best to natural-colored baits and slower presentations that stay in the strike zone longer.
Finesse plastics, jigs, jerkbaits, and deep-diving crankbaits are producing consistent results, especially when worked along steep banks and transition areas between shallow and deep water.
Crappie and Panfish Update
Crappie fishing continues to improve in protected coves and creek arms, with fish holding near brush piles, docks, and timber in deeper water. Vertical jigging and light tackle presentations are producing the most consistent bites.
Bluegill and other sunfish are beginning to show increased activity during warmer periods, particularly in shallower areas with sun exposure and minimal current.
Trout and River Action
Cold-water streams and rivers in the Upstate are providing excellent trout fishing opportunities. Wild and stocked trout are responding well to small spinners, flies, and natural baits, especially in shaded runs and deeper pools.
River anglers targeting bass and other species are finding success by focusing on current seams, rock ledges, and slower-moving water adjacent to faster flows.
What Anglers Should Watch For
Upstate anglers should pay attention to:
-
Clear-water conditions requiring lighter line and subtle presentations
-
Depth changes on steep reservoir banks
-
Increased fish activity during stable weather windows
-
Water temperature differences between main lake areas and protected coves
Local Tip
In the Upstate’s clear lakes, boat positioning is often just as important as lure choice. Keeping distance from structure and making longer casts can significantly improve success.
